AN INSIGHT INTO AI

Object Design and Research

'An Insight into Ai' was a student project that I completed in my third year of my degree. The project aims to address the problem topic of Ai in the design industry.

The concept for the project was to test the capabilities of Ai, by removing myself completely from the design and manufacturing process, and simply facilitating the completion of the project. This could be done using a number of Ai driven softwares. I began by chatting with Ai Chatbots, explaining the brief of the project and asking it how I should complete the project, and what object I should make. I would then use the description that was given by the chatbot, and feed it into the Ai text to image generators so I would have a fully visualised and Ai generated concept to make. Using the Ai generated Image, I then feed it to the 2D image to 3D modelling software, Kaedim, to produce a fully Ai generated 3D model that could then be 3D printed.

The images below represent the final outcome, a broken pot, which represents the refugee crisis by telling the story of famous refugee, Mahatma Gandhi. The complete failure to communicate high-level concepts truly demonstrates the dangerous impact that a complete reliance on Ai may have on the design industry.

You can learn more about this project by watching the video below, and reading the transcript of my conversation with Ai.

I want you to design an object, that communicates a particular narrative about a worldly issue. What issue should we address?

The issue that we should address is the current refugee crisis. This object should communicate the struggles and hardships that refugees face on a daily basis.

Is there a particular historical narrative of someone we can tell through the object?

Yes, the historical narrative of someone we can tell through the object is that of a refugee. This object should communicate the struggles and hardships that refugees

face on a daily basis.

Give me an example of a historical recount of a refugee’s experience.

A famous refugee’s experience that could be recounted through this object is that of Mahatma Gandhi. Gandhi was a refugee who faced many struggles and

hardships during his lifetime. This object could communicate his story and the story of other refugees who have faced similar struggles.

What struggles did he face?

Gandhi faced many struggles during his lifetime, including poverty, discrimination, and violence. This object could communicate his story and the story of other

refugees who have faced similar struggles.

How might I represent poverty in an object?

One way to represent poverty in an object is to use ragged or tattered materials. This would communicate the struggles that refugees face in terms of not having

access to basic necessities. Another way to represent poverty in an object is to use dark or muted colors. This would communicate the struggles that refugees face in

terms of not having access to basic necessities.

How might I represent discrimination in an object?

One way to represent discrimination in an object is to use sharp or jagged materials. This would communicate the struggles that refugees face in terms of being treated unfairly or unjustly. Another way to represent discrimination in an object is to use dark or muted colors. This would communicate the struggles

that refugees face in terms of being treated unfairly or unjustly.

How might I represent violence in an object?

One way to represent violence in an object is to use broken or shattered materials. This would communicate the struggles that refugees face in terms of being subjected to violence or aggression. Another way to represent violence in an object is to use dark or muted colors. This would communicate the struggles that

refugees face in terms of being subjected to violence or aggression.

How does the object show Ghandi’s story?

The object can show Gandhi’s story by recounting some of the struggles he faced during his lifetime. This would communicate the struggles and hardships that refugees face on a daily basis.

What is the objects shape?

The object’s shape can be anything that communicates the struggles and hardships that refugees face.

Tell me what shape it is.

The object’s shape can be anything that communicates the struggles and hardships that refugees face.

What does the object look like? How would you describe it to someone?

The object can be anything that communicates the struggles and hardships that refugees face.

How do I represent that physically?

The object can be anything that communicates the struggles and hardships that refugees face.

I want you to design the object. What actually is it?

The object can be anything that communicates the struggles and hardships that refugees face.

Give me an example.

Some examples of objects that could communicate the struggles and hardships that refugees face are a ragged piece of cloth, a broken piece of pottery, or a

dark-colored rock.

Pick one.

A broken pottery.

If I were to create a broken piece of pottery, How can that represent Ghandi more?

If you were to create a broken piece of pottery, you could include a note with it that recounts some of the struggles that Gandhi faced during his lifetime. This would

communicate the struggles and hardships that refugees face on a daily basis.

What would the note say?

The note could recount some of the struggles that Gandhi faced during his lifetime, such as poverty, discrimination, and violence. This would communicate the struggles and hardships that refugees face on a daily basis.

Give me text to write on the note.

“Gandhi was a refugee who faced many struggles and hardships during his lifetime. This object represents

the struggles and hardships that refugees face on a daily basis.”

What type of clay is the pottery made from?

The type of clay used for the pottery is not as important as the story that it tells. The pottery could be made

from any type of clay that communicates the struggles and hardships that refugees face.

How can I further represent ghandi in the broken pottery?

If you were to create a broken piece of pottery, you could include a note with it that recounts some of the struggles that Gandhi faced during his lifetime. This would communicate the struggles and hardships that refugees face on a daily basis.

Why did you recommend a broken piece of pottery to represent ghandi?

I recommended a broken piece of pottery to represent Gandhi because it can communicate the struggles and hardships that he faced during his lifetime. This would communicate the struggles and hardships that refugees face on a daily basis.

What in particular does it represent?

The broken piece of pottery represents the struggles and hardships that Gandhi faced during his lifetime. This would communicate the struggles and hardships that refugees face on a daily basis.

Does it represent anything else?

The broken piece of pottery represents the struggles and hardships that refugees face on a daily basis.
